Typhoon
Author: Michelle Rooks
A typhoon is a tropical cyclone very similar to a hurricane. However, it is formed over the Western Pacific and is more intense. They occur when the energy released by the condensation of moisture in rising air causes a positive feedback loop over warm ocean waters. A typhoon starts near the equator and moves westward gaining strength and size. A storm surge will often be present with a typhoon. These cyclones have very strong, destructive winds that frequently reach 150 mph. These winds cause the most damage.
